Simple and Delicious
Looking at the photo above, most people will see a steak and a pile of Brussels sprouts with bacon.
It's a delicious-looking Paleo meal, sure, but the perfect meal? That might be pushing it.
Except...when I look at the photo above, I'm flooded with memories of a great dinner on a special occasion:
The house was filled with candlelight and conversation. The steak was pink and tender, the Brussels sprouts turned out better than ever (even the non-vegetable eaters were raving about them). The smell of bacon and the sound of laughter wafted through the air.
The food tasted great, as Paleo food usually does, but it was everything else about the meal that made it so...perfect.
There are ways to make your meals special even when they're simple.
Here are some ideas:
The foods we eat, especially pastured meats and organic produce, have been given much care and attention by the people who grew them. Think of something you created and how much it meant to you. You want to talk about it, right?
The person selling you vegetables at the farmer's market cares about vegetables. Your butcher (or farmer) cares about the steaks you selected for dinner. When you start to talk to these people, your experience is enhanced and your food actually tastes better!
At times, cooking is a solitary adventure, just you and the cutlets. Cooking becomes more fun when there's someone else in the kitchen.
I love the time I spend cooking with my husband, Scott. He cooked the steak in the photo above; I made the Brussels sprouts with bacon. We celebrate our kitchen successes and laugh at our mistakes (usually).
When you prepare your meals with someone else, cooking becomes an achievement you share together.
If you have kids, you can do wonders for their self-esteem by teaching them how to cook.
This takes about one minute and makes dinner ten times better. You don't have to do anything fancy, just set up a few napkins, silverware and...
A candle or two makes dinner an event
This is so important. You don't have to go to a lot of trouble to express your gratitude. Even a silent "thank you" goes a long way. Over time you'll realize that even the simplest of meals feels like a special occasion when you're thankful for it.
Creating a healthy, sexy, lean body begins with the foods you eat. Some meals will be more creative and inspired than others, but they can all be perfect in their own way.
By practicing these habits, your meals will become events instead of hassles. You might be staring down at a simple meal, nothing fancy, until you think about the love that went into creating it.
