Kettlebell DVDs: My Top 3 Picks

Using a kettlebell (KB) DVD is a great way to get an amazingly effective workout in a short amount of time without leaving home. Kettlebell workouts really work. Choose a kettlebell DVD taught by certified kettlebell instructor, and if the packaging says “no kettlebell required,” stay away. You need a kettlebell to do a KB workout.

Best Overall:

The Extreme Kettlebell Cardio Workout with Keith Weber

This workout has what it takes to destroy you, if you’re into that kind of thing. If you’re ready to get serious about your KB workouts and turn your body into a lean machine, this is the DVD you want. Great for both men and women, it moves fast and burns hard. It’s broken down into smaller workouts, so you can do one quick workout a day or—if you can handle it—the whole workout, which lasts 60+ minutes. You will sweat, breathe heavy, and feel very sore the next day. You’ll also get in awesome shape fast. Another way to use this DVD is to split it into two 30-minute workouts a week with a couple days of rest in between. Try it for a month and see what happens. Watching super-fit physical therapist Keith Weber hoisting his kettlebell around on a beach in Mexico provides plenty of motivation.

Best For Women:

Misfit’s Kettlebell Basix with Missy Beaver

The whole point of a workout DVD is that you’ll use it over and over, not just once. You’ll see the same instructor and the same scenery. You’ll hear the same instructions and music. If any part of that is annoying, the DVD goes into a drawer and never comes out. Such is not the case with Misfit’s Kettlebell Basix. I’ve used this DVD over thirty times and I still like everything about it. Missy and her crew of two are in great shape, the instructions are clear and the music is unobtrusive electronica. The one thing that could be improved upon is the production value which isn’t as slick as some people prefer. The sun was setting during the outdoor shoot, creating some shadows and sun glare. I don’t mind it because I think it adds to the relaxed California vibe, which is a welcome change for a New Yorker like me. The workout lasts about 25 minutes and will make you sweat and breathe heavy (if you use a kettlebell that is the appropriate weight for your fitness level). Missy demonstrates every exercise by doing one set and then tells viewers to join in for the second set. Once you know the routine and have built some strength, start your set during the demonstration and go straight through; otherwise, this workout will be too easy for you. Kettlebells build strength fast, so don’t be afraid to pick up a heavier one when the time is right. From what I hear about Missy, she encourages her clients to really challenge themselves. Even though this is my top pick for women, guys will get a lot out of it too.

Best For Learning Form:

Pavel’s From Russia with Tough Love Kettlebell Workout for a Femme Fatale with Pavel Tsatsouline Featuring: Andrea Du Cane and D.C. Maxwell

This DVD is intended for instructional use, and is not a follow along workout. For that reason, I was a little disappointed when I first watched it. The upside is that no one knows kettlebells better than Pavel. His instructions and tips on form are priceless. Safe, effective KB workouts all start with correct form, so learning from a master in the beginning makes all the difference. The section on kettlebell swings is my favorite because it clearly shows what not to do when swinging a KB. Watch this DVD at least once through before trying the exercises. Occasionally go back and review the lessons. Even though this DVD is for the “femme fatale,” everyone can learn something. Pavel’s sense of humor and tough-guy attitude are part of the fun. He’s probably the only person in the world who can get away with telling D.C. Maxwell to “hit the deck, give me five.”

I buy all of my kettlebell DVDs and books from Dragondoor. They have great customer service and all of their products are created by certified kettlebell instructors. Dragondoor is so on top of it, I always receive my order in two or three days.
